Abstract
This paper presents an unified approach to the analysis and design of an AC (induction, reluctance or PM synchronous) motor drive able to meet a desired torque versus speed characteristic including a flux-weakening region. At first, appropriate motor parameters and current rating at a given voltage are derived as functions of the specified flux-weakening speed range and torque limits, reducing the motor and inverter size as much as possible. Then, the motor design equations are given in order to carry out the main motor dimensions for all of the rotor typologies. Examples of motor designs are included in the paper.
