Abstract
Investigates the effect of anisotropic permeability on fluid flow and passive non-diffusive species transport in cortical bone. A model is developed which focuses on flow and transport induced by a single blood vessel within a porous anisotropic matrix. Model predictions are found to be qualitatively consistent with experimental observations. More significantly, the model suggests that flow within the cortex can in some instances be determined by local permeability characteristics, independent of the local pressure (stress) gradient. This result challenges the notion that external stress alone determines in-bone flow characteristics
