Abstract
Principles of various erbium-doped fibre amplifier (EDFA) concepts based on specific applications are introduced. The individual optical components used for the EDFAs are compared in terms of performance according to different technologies involved. System experiments at various bit rates will demonstrate effectively the high potential of erbium doped fibre amplifiers in present and future optical transmission systems
