Abstract
The dynamic performance of a permanent magnet brushless DC motor (PMBDCM) for electric propulsion of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system is presented. A relationship between the aircraft motion equations and the machine equations was established and used to study the influence of machine dynamic performance on aircraft motion path from takeoff to steady level flight. Simulations results showed loss of altitude and exacerbative thrust when system was operated in speed control mode. The work presented here is aimed at establishing the basis for development of improvement schemes to be presented in the second part of this paper
