  • Abstract
Like many other investor owned companies, Keyspan has turned to outside engineering and construction organizations to secure the necessary additional manpower needed to implement T&D infrastructure projects. Although this process has worked satisfactorily, Keyspan has observed that managing and coordinating the various firms deployed on a project can require extensive in-house project management effort. In the fall of 2000, ABB and Keyspan met to discuss a new approach to T&D infrastructure deployment and Keyspan decided to try the modular substation concept. The modular substation process should not be done on a one shot deal because the benefits of deploying the approach increase with every project. Even after the successful completion of nine modular substation projects, Keyspan and ABB are still finding means of decreasing the cost and accelerating the schedules of new substations
