Abstract
This paper investigates the protection challenges that are associated with the adoption of DC distribution using power electronics based converters. Providing a comprehensive protection for a DC system requires fast detection of faults and fast opening action by DC circuit breakers. Another challenge is the protection of shunt capacitor banks used on the converters. The paper investigates the ways to address these challenges so that fast fault detection and isolation on a DC system can be achieved
