Abstract
The EWSD digital switching system is a highly reliable telecommunications exchange manufactured by Siemens Stromberg-Carlson. Software errors are detected, reported and recovered from using a software recovery controller. This controller monitors the success of the switch in recovering from software faults and forces a recovery escalation if the recovery is not successful. In the future, more intelligent recovery controllers may be developed, possibly using neural networks to decrease the amount of system downtime
