  • Abstract
The paper proposes a method for resources allocation based on a hierarchical two level network architecture for a video on demand service: in the first level (relevant to local central office) a limited number of high vision programs are stored; the other ones are retrievable on a user´s request from the upper level (containing the totality of programs) via digital links at (at least) 1.5 Mbit/s. The resources allocation strategy between the layers is based on a distribution function giving the program vision probabilities. A minimum-cost method to find out the storage capacity in the central office and the number of digital links between the layers is presented
