Abstract
The paper analyzes the functional hierarchy of modern multifunctional protection relays from the point of view of IEC 61850 and provides examples of the models of such devices. Requirements for grouping of functional elements in sub-functions are discussed. The use of high-speed peer-to-peer communications between different IEDs and the mapping of incoming and outgoing GOOSE messages to the protection device programmable scheme logic is described. Configuration tools and methods for functional testing of IEDs are discussed at the end of the paper
