  • Abstract
Wideband impulse noise and background noise measurements have been taken on copper telephone loops terminating at three New Jersey residences. An analysis of these measurements is presented. This analysis constitutes a preliminary characterization of wideband noise at residential locations and is an important factor in determining some of the signal processing needs of asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) systems. The impulse noise data collected so far indicates that signal processing techniques like forward error correction block coding will be needed in ADSL electronics to mitigate this noise impairment. The analysis of the measurements is presented in three ways: as power or energy spectral densities, as probability density functions of the time waveform voltage amplitudes, and as impulse arrival and interarrival time statistics
