Abstract
The jitter incurred to a periodic stream in an ATM multiplexer is formulated and analyzed. The multiplexer “serves” the superposition of a tagged periodic cell stream and a background traffic consisted of a sequence of independent and identically distributed batches of cells with arbitrary distribution. For a discrete time system, a solution methodology is developed that can be utilized to solve a large class of problems. The distribution of the jitter and the delay of the background traffic for a number of service policies is derived and the impact of various traffic parameters on the delay and the jitter of the traffic streams is investigated. Simple heavy traffic results which provide upper bound on the jitter moments and some fundamental understanding of this complicated process is also provided
