Abstract :
Low and medium voltage aerial distribution systems have been improved significantly in the last decade with the increased usage of insulated and covered cables. The primary application is in developing countries, where bare aerial networks have been replaced with low voltage aerial bundled cable (ABC) and sometimes also medium voltage compacted spacer cable systems. Although typical components used in these systems are not new, some new product developments are focused on reducing energy theft. These issues are discussed in this paper, with emphasis on an energy distribution box, its internal spring action concept contacts and other high technology components. Further goals using this system include connector quality improvement, network organization, phase balancing, compacting, harmonization with telecommunication networks, and disconnecting and reconnecting customers. This paper also details the experiences of several companies that have switched to this new network architecture
