Abstract :
This paper describes an on-line partial discharge (PD) measuring technique in newly installed high-pressure gas-filled (HPGF) termination. This technique is based on inserting an inductive sensor inside the base of the termination. A test loop consisting of two 11-kV rated high-pressure gas-filled (HPGF) termination and 30 feet of 3,500 KCM HPGF cable was assembled in the laboratory. PD was monitored while the termination was subjected to load cycling. The effect of load cycling on the PD onset voltage, magnitude, frequency and repetition was examined. PD activities resulting from defects normally encountered during installation were also investigated. This paper demonstrates that on-line PD monitoring in high-voltage termination can be made in newly installed termination equipped with PD sensor embedded in the termination base. It also demonstrated that the PD monitoring is capable of detecting termination aging and defects normally resulting from poor installation
