  • Abstract
    Doppler radar is re-establishing its credibility within the rail industry as the latest generation systems demonstrate that they can offer significant improvements in accuracy, at an acceptable level of reliability and survivability, and without the constraint of conventional methods of having to be axle mounted. The on-board processing of a Doppler system offers the potential of a range of outputs in a variety of formats. If accessed via a databus, a single radar-based unit could simultaneously support the control of traction and braking, position and speed determination and cumulative distance travelled. As technology continues to advance, then the viability of radar should continue to improve. Processing will continue to increase in power relative to its cost, and scientific developments will further enhance the availability of damage resistant materials for use in components such as radomes. Alternatively, technology at the level that it currently exists will reduce in cost sufficiently to open up additional price sensitive markets
