Abstract :
The emergence of multimedia applications leads to a new approach for connection management and to a redefinition of the quality of service (QoS) in communications. These applications involve very heterogeneous media which ask for complete reliability, real-time constraints, throughput of hundreds of Mbps, or even synchronization and broadcast mechanisms. No single protocol stack can efficiently support the adaptation from application to the network; each medium should be mapped into the most appropriate ATM transportation stack with respect to its peculiarities. The QoS-selector assumes this task of mediator between the demands of multimedia applications and the high-quality features of the ATM networks
