Abstract
Network intensive distributed applications can nowadays benefit from the availability of commercial implementations of high speed networking technologies in the local area. The paper presents a selection of experimental results of the inter-process communication throughput performance achievable with a SUN workstations connected by Internet protocol (IF) over fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) local area networks (LANs). The major causes affecting throughput are assessed
