Abstract
An experimental 198-Mb/s high speed magnetic recording channel for high definition digital VCRs has been developed using a new 8-12 conversion channel code with a density ratio of 1.33. In this paper the optimum parameters for integration detection of the recording channel are considered. In addition, a modified transversal filter suitable for channel codes characterized by a minimum run-length of 2 bits (in NRZL recording), such as the 8-12 conversion code, is examined. A resulting error rate below 10-4 is found at an area density of 5.8 μm2/bit. The paper also describes a new decision-making method for detecting 2-bit symbols for channel codes with a minimum run-length of 2 bits
