Abstract
In this paper, we review external modulators used in today´s telecommunications systems for long haul and metro applications. A review is given of the dominant modulation effects and modulator materials. Operating principles for various types of modulators are discussed along with their important performance parameters. Finally, future trends in optical systems are reviewed and their implications for modulation techniques, technologies and performance.
