Abstract
The passenger mass transit rail system in FR Yugoslavia is in the initial stage of development. The basis of this system development consists of investigating the requirements and possibilities of organizing the mass transit of passengers in 11 major cities of Serbia and Montenegro. A necessary condition of this system development is the provision of adequate, new vehicles. The authors describe how the following configuration of vehicle asynchronous traction drives has been selected: power transformer; network four-quadrant power converter; high voltage DC link; PWM voltage inverter; and three-phase asynchronous motor. The converters will utilise GTO thyristors. The regenerative electric braking method has been selected
