Abstract
Summary form only given. Technological innovation and business practices tend to be managed in separate business and technology value chains. The opportunity exists to integrate them within the context of enterprise strategy and leverage both for business advantage. Within the National Center for Manufacturing Science (NCMS) Management of Accelerated Technology Insertion (MATI) project, the participants intend to investigate how best to manage the present from the future, that is, to create conditions that allow for the successful development and adoption of technologies as a source of competitive advantage. They expect that their investigation will generate principles and high level business and planning process recommendations applicable to most technology intensive industrial enterprises. The authors describe how the MATI project will, over a period of 18 months, propose, develop and test new business paradigms to accelerate returns on technology investments, particularly in terms of technology innovation, adoption and insertion
