Abstract :
Multimedia technology has enabled the delivery of digitized audio and video streams that promote effective use of the embedded information. As the sizes of such digitized data objects are typically huge, the implementation of multimedia applications in a network makes the sharing of such information more cost-effective. On the other hand, traditional network environments, such as Ethernet, have relatively low network bandwidths to accommodate large-scale sharing for these digitized objects. This paper discusses the network performance issues for a 10 Mbps Ethernet to support full-motion digital video playback across the network. Results of some studies are presented in this paper, together with a quantitative analysis concerning the network utilization statistics. These results essentially allow the projection of the number of supportable network-based digital video playback stations
