Abstract :
Recent improvements in the performance of computers together with efficient data compression techniques are envisaged to provide a major impetus for the proliferation of voice and data integration on IEEE 802 LANs. In this paper, we propose a distributed communications network architecture, based on an ATM switch fabric for internetworking IEEE 802.3 and 802.5 LANs. The proposed ATM network would have the capability to offer integrated isochronous and asynchronous data services. In addition, a scheme to distinguish between the isochronous and asynchronous data in the internetworking unit has been proposed, so as to manage the transfer of time-constrained voice packets over the network
