Abstract :
In recent years, research has shown that network coding can dramatically improve network capacity and reliability for certain types of wireless networks. We investigate whether this performance gain through network coding carries over to the military tactical data network with its unique military requirements. In our study, we design network coding transmission algorithms that are tailored to tactical data network requirements, and compare the performance of several algorithms in user mission environments. We use discrete event simulation to evaluate the performance gains of these algorithms, based on metrics that are suitable for the military users. We demonstrate that network coding can alleviate the problem of low reliability in some types of military wireless networks. Our conclusion is that a proper application of network coding can enhance military user communications in operational environments, and we recommend appropriate use of network coding to military users.
