Abstract
The design of a multimedia campus directory is presented. Multimedia data comprising image, audio and video clips are stored centrally in the server at the computer center. They are transported upon request to the PC-based multimedia kiosks placed strategically around the campus. Although the centralization of data has the benefits of ensuring data consistency and easy updating, the transmission of digital video over the relatively low bandwidth network becomes a challenging design issue. This critical issue is addressed by carefully selecting the right formats for the multimedia data. The network hardware and software for the server and clients are suitably selected and integrated to provide a high quality value added service over the campus network
