Abstract :
This paper describes the design, construction and performance of an experimental high-voltage pulse generator based on the use of a fast transmission line transformer (TLT) [1]. The generator described is one of a series of generators built as part of a long-term programme to develop TLT technology for use in high average power, repetitive pulsed power systems. The complete system comprises a four stage TLT driven from a low impedance 50kV LC generator which is switched by a 2-stage ceramic thyratron (CX1725). Some magnetic sharpening is included to reduce the risetime of the pulse produced by the LC generator to below 20ns prior to its injection into the TLT. The nominal output impedance of the complete generator is 67/spl Omega/ and the risetime and width (FWHM) of the output pulse are 16 and 50 ns respectively. An analysis of the behaviour of this type of generator is given and the results of performance tests are discussed.
