Abstract :
To realize any controlled ICF project, powerful energy sources are quite necessary. But there are none. A noticeable progress was achieved in output characteristics (the combination of high power with large energy accumulation) of explosive magnetic generators (EMG). As the development of magnetic cumulation idea, put forward by A.D. Sakharov in 1951, in 1960-s two new ideas were proposed in VNIIEF to increase EMG fast-response by two orders (from tens of microseconds up to tenths fractions of a microsecond) with the simultaneous growth of current pulse amplitude. These achievements supported the ICF concept, based on the (MAGO) target implosion by a fast-growing field, which was proposed in VNIIEF (1972) discussed in the USSR Academy of Sciences (1976) and then published (1979). In this report, key physical issues are analyzed and the problems to be solved are stated. The results, achieved in powerful fast-operating EMG, fast-opening switches, transmission lines, insulation systems, are discussed. Brief presentation of the results is given, which were obtained in the liner acceleration experiments and in plasma preheating with the EMG created. The MAGO system is concluded to be the closest to ignition realization, as Powerful energy sources for it are practically developed, and the concept itself doesn´t need intermediate transformations of the magnetic energy, which decrease total efficiency.
