Abstract :
It is proposed that there are three regimes of PEOS operation: the bipolar regime where l/sub peos/=n/sub e/; the, modified bipolar regime where I/sup peos/=n/sub e//sup 1/2/; and the hydro regime where l/sub peos/=n/sub e//sup 1/4/. These are identified through the mechanism which terminates the conduction phase. It is further proposed that in all but the hydro regime, the switching characteristics of the PEOS can be predicted using simple ion erosion as the opening mechanism. In fact, the coupling of these conduction models along with erosive opening will be shown to reproduce the trends and limitations observed in PEOS operation both qualitatively and quantitatively.
