Abstract :
This paper proposes a new approach for contingency ranking/selection. The key elements of the method are: (a) use of a quadratized power flow (QPF) model; (b) use of contingency control variables for precise modeling of contingencies; and (c) use of the costate method to obtain the sensitivity of appropriate performance indices with respect to the contingency control variables. The performance of the proposed method has been evaluated with an example test system. This evaluation indicates that the proposed method is superior to existing ranking methods in the sense that provides a more accurate ranking of contingencies. The paper provides a detailed description of the method and example results using a small test system.
