Abstract
The development of the communication protocol software used for operations and maintenance (O&M) communications in a distributed intelligent network for initial application in British Telecom´s digital derived services network (DSSN) is described. The communication protocol is based on the OSI seven-layer reference model. The intelligent network architecture is briefly described and the OSI reference model is summarized. The development strategy followed, and the experiences encountered in doing the development, are also described.<>
