Abstract
This paper gives short description of the guidance mechanisms of the Photonic Crystal Fibers from the band gaps point of view. It seems that a new generation of optical fibers can outperform conventional silica-doped fibers for many applications. These new fibers should improve performance in some aspect and be competitive with existing telecommunication technology. For non-telecom area, like sensing, their new features show a huge potential for a new applications.
