  • Abstract
    Plagiarism refers to the stealing of intellectual property-ideas, words, thoughts, conclusions, without giving proper credit to the author Young students and novice researchers lack the skills to identify and avoid plagiarism and thus end up in committing it. Anything available through the digital world and Internet is considered to be free of any legal or intellectual property issues by some writers and researchers, thus leading to the immense growth of plagiarism. Though digitization has led to an increase in plagiarism of contents, it has also led to the development of plagiarism detection tools that are used to combat it. Plagiarism has been rising at steadfast rate due to a number of factors, the major ones being lack of awareness and fierce competition to excel. This paper highlights the various aspects of plagiarism and the various steps being taken by the Indian government to curb this menace. We have also discussed survey results and conclusions based on the seminars conducted to make students aware about plagiarism, its consequences (through the case studies) and the means to curb it. The paper also highlights the various challenges that we are currently facing in combating plagiarism and some potential areas that researchers can look forward to.
