Abstract
The two mechanisms (chiral ions and flexoelectricity) which allow surface induced nematic bistable displays are described. A novel nematic-cholesteric bistable display is presented which features fast writing and response time (allowing high-definition TV), true bistability and easy multiplexing, and no problems of bulk material alignment.<>
