Abstract :
This paper describes progress on the development of a computer vision system for the automated detection of pedestrians. It describes the results of recent trials of the pedestrian detector during which the accuracy of pedestrian presence detection and volume estimation were evaluated. Pedestrian detection at crossings is currently of particular interest due to the development of the PUFFIN (pedestrian user friendly intelligent) pedestrian crossing. PUFFIN crossings use pedestrian presence detection at the kerbside area to determine if waiting pedestrians are present. The requirements and development of an evaluation system for pedestrian detection algorithms are described.
