Abstract :
Virtualization is increasingly prevalent in modern computer systems and in large data centers. Cloud computing, based on providing clients with virtual machines, is growing at a rapid pace. We use kernel tracing in order to help Cloud administrators to efficiently monitor resource usage by virtual machines, coexisting on physical machines and competing for their resources. The new proposed analysis displays, for each virtual machine, its state along the time axis, and thus the time spent executing each process as well as preemption. This is used to point out latency problems specific to system virtualization.
