Abstract :
This paper discusses some issues related to the application of resonant harmonic filters to high-power AC/DC thyristor rectifiers. A theoretical optimization of filter design based on steady-state characteristics of load current harmonics is firstly discussed. Then, the dynamic component of AC/DC rectifiers is also taken into account showing that it can enhance parallel resonances and cause amplification of harmonics and interharmonics. Thus, also the dynamic component of the load should be introduced in the filter design since the overall performance is strongly dependent on a combination of passive filter components and AC/DC thyristor control parameters. ATP simulations and measurements on DC arc furnaces are also reported
