Abstract :
Summary form only given, as follows. Over the past year, a standard for compression of synchronous data in DSU/CSUs (56 kb/s) has been developed. The development began in an informal industry consortium known as the Synchronous Data Compression Consortium (SDCC) and the work later migrated to a committee of the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA). This work chronicles the development of the standard, which is based on the Internet Standard Point-to-point Protocol, examining both the issues involved when applying data compression to communication links and the impact of choices made along the development path.
