Abstract :
Linear motion electromagnetic systems (LMES) have been know for the enabling high linear acceleration/deceleration, robustness and simple control. Here the magnetic characteristics and operation of linear induction motor (LIM) is investigated. Field analysis has been presented with tangential and normal components of the electromagnetic force in the airgap of a field oriented controlled LIM. The primary rotor time constant has been determined to implement vector control to achieve high thrust and acceleration. In addition, the distribution of airgap field has also been discussed. These studies have been performed for a 3 phase, 4 pole experimental LIM system
