Abstract
In this paper, the near-field properties of weakly modulated resonant waveguide gratings are treated. Numerical results obtained with rigorous-coupled wave analysis (RCWA) and with the finite-difference time domain method (FDTD) yield quantitative information on relative field strengths and spatial extents associated with the near fields. The results show that the near-field strength can be greatly enhanced and that it is inversely proportional to the modulation strength up to ∼0.36 in the case under study.
