Abstract
Visualizations have been increasingly drawing interest in Personalized Learning Environments (PLE). Specifically, visual narratives have recently started to be used in learning environments to engage learners. This paper introduces the VisEN framework, which provides learners with personalized visual narratives in PLE. The visual narratives, tailored to individual learners, present engagement scores and peer comparisons. We discuss the construction of personalized visual narratives and evaluate their role in motivating students to engage with a personalized online SQL Database course. A combination of qualitative and quantitative studies were carried out using log data from 108 engineering students who participated in this course over a period of three months. We found a strong correlation between learner interactions with personalized visual narratives and learner engagement.
