Abstract
We demonstrate a cost-effective single-fiber 10-Gbps downlink/2.5-Gbps uplink wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network system using a directly modulated laser (DML) and a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA). We employ DC-balanced 9B/10B line coding for downstream DML modulation. Not only does this coding greatly improve the performance of the frequency-shift keyed downstream signals, but it also reduces the power fluctuation of the downstream signals injected into the RSOA averaged over the upstream symbol duration, yet having a small overhead of 11%.
