Abstract
The paper provides a full explanation of digital compression, the key factors to consider for implementation, and how this technology can cause not only a revolution in video, but a revolution in social/cultural, corporate and educational infrastructures worldwide. In order to successfully implement digital compression and the accompanying services, the author discusses various questions: Where are the compression markets? Who is using compression? What are the costs associated with digital implementation? What is the impact of international standards, i.e., MPEG 2, DVB? What new services does the future hold?
