Abstract
A new algorithm for motion compensated image interpolation has been presented. It uses non-linear mapping functions to construct a general motion model which can be utilised by any motion estimator. Experimental results on broadcasting image sequences have shown a consistent improvement over conventional methods which can be as high as 3 dB. The proposed method can be used as a complementary technique on existing standards converters to improve their estimation accuracy and thus the picture quality of the interpolated pictures
