Abstract
As China has begun to realize the importance of strategic emerging industries (SEIs) Zhejiang Province also identified nine industries as strategic emerging industries that the government focuses on fostering. As is known, basic research is the source of innovation and plays an important role in supporting the development of SEIs. The authors show the case of Zhejiang Province in developing the SEIs and to what extent basic research can support the development of SEIs. At last, the authors also give some suggestions about Zhejiang´s basic research strategy and policy, which can accelerate the development of SEIs in Zhejiang.
