Abstract :
A finite element method (FEM) based analysis was performed in order to design different constructions of terminations for crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) cables. The primary task was to limit the electric field at the insulation screen end of XLPE cables. Numerical modeling made it possible to monitor how stress relief cones and materials with different relative dielectric constant alone or in a combination with isolated or grounded embedded electrodes (EE) affected the electric stress grading. The most promising constructions of the cable terminations were selected for experimental testing in a high voltage laboratory
