  • Abstract
Summary form only given. The educational component of engineering and technology management is continuing to grow at an impressive pace. The history of such programs goes back to early 1900s but the primary growth has been taking place since mid 1970s. There were less than 30 degree granting programs, worldwide, in 1976. That number has grown 6-fold in 20 years. As a result of these forces, the field has been showing a very strong growth pattern since mid-1970s. The earlier growth was in the United States, but in the last ten years, other countries have started to develop degree programs just as rapidly as the US. Close to 200 universities are now offering degrees in engineering and technology management, worldwide. Most of this growth is at the graduate level, with majority of the institutions offering Masters degrees, and an increasing number of them developing Ph.D. programs. This paper summarizes the results of a study conducted two years ago. It is the fifth such effort in a longitudinal study being conducted since 1976. More than 3,000 people were contacted in academic institutions throughout the world. Detailed information was obtained about the educational characteristics and research directions of the field. The findings are reported in the paper
