Abstract :
By taking a fundamental look at the way animal-tracking systems work, suggestions are made for alternative systems of improved performance. The feasibility of an animal-tracking `tag´, based on an Omega radio-navigation receiver is explored, and the design and performance of a prototype receiver described. The paper demonstrates that such an Omega tag is more than competitive with the use of the widely-used Argos satellite tracking system because of the substantial cost and power savings it offers
