  • Abstract
A new technique to widen the bandwidth of a microstrip patch antenna is proposed. A square patch antenna is printed on a thin dielectric substrate (Rogers R04003 with εr=3.38 and substrate thickness 1.5 mm). It is demonstrated that antenna bandwidth can be improved substantially by utilizing a modified photonic band-gap type structure representing capacitive and inductive elements. Data demonstrating a bandwidth enhancement of 1.6 times the antenna original bandwidth is shown. Radiation pattern data are also presented
