Abstract :
We introduce a new management concept called smart push model for distributed network monitoring. In this model, mobile management components are used to execute network monitoring tasks closer to or on the distributed network elements where network problems are monitored quickly or are reported automatically without the need of polling. Monitoring policies can be easily changed as administrative requirements change, by the administrator remotely controlling the delegated components, accessing their methods, and modifying their properties. In addition, the mobile components incorporate the extended concept of the meta-variable representing semantic or high-level compression of the MIB (management information base) variables. It provides a natural filtering of the management data
