Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. Research and education in microelectronics is supported at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in several different programs. The programs are described with attention given to the needs of individual investigators as well as research groups and research centers. NSF programs of interest to universities, colleges, and small businesses are described. There are cooperative programs with industry, government laboratories, and other user facilities for microfabrication. There is a shrinking pool of United States citizens who choose careers in engineering; several NSF programs are targeting at increasing human resources in engineering
