Abstract
This paper draws on considerable real world experience relating to the challenges that can arise when connecting significant levels of wind generation to electricity networks. It also presents how these challenges can be effectively addressed using STATCOM reactive compensation, ensuring grid integrity is maintained while renewable energy goals are achieved. The primary focus is on the origins of the grid code requirements that exist, how to assess the requirements of a particular system, and how these requirements can be met. Points of particular relevance to the wind generation environment in China are raised.
